Orthodontics and Jaw Surgery Through the Eyes of a Patient

With the collaboration of Dr Hockel and Dr Movahed, Brady has completed orthodontics, double jaw surgery with joint replacements, and now has an airway friendly smile! Read the story through Brady’s own words: 

1. Tell us your name, age, and the concern that brought you to us.

My name is Brady, I am 30 years old. I came to Dr. Hockel in 2021 due to a long history of breathing and jaw issues. For as long as I can remember, I was always breathing through my mouth, was a heavy snorer, and never felt rested. As a child, I thought the root cause of my issues was related to my sinuses, therefore went through multiple sinus surgeries that led to no success. As I grew older, I developed severe TMJ with frequent popping, locking, and jaw pain. After visiting Dr. Hockel, I began to realize that all of my breathing and jaw issues were related and decided to pursue treatment.

2. What treatment did you undergo?

I began orthodontics in 2021 with the decision made to undergo TMJ total joint reconstruction (double jaw surgery). Most of my time in orthodontics before surgery was spent on upper and lower palatal expansion to widen my smile before surgery. I also had a lingual frenectomy and completed myofunctional therapy to prepare for my jaw surgery. In March 2023, I underwent TMJ total joint reconstruction surgery.  After fully recovering from the jaw surgery, my orthodontics were removed in September 2023. 

3. How has the treatment helped you?

Going through this treatment has been the best decision of my life. I no longer have any jaw pain, and I feel completely rested after a night's sleep. I am able to breathe through my nose without any effort, and no longer snore. I feel more energized during the day and more engaged in life. I am so pleased with the physical transformation of my smile and jaw.
